Description

This useful, practical workshop addresses one of the most challenging, sometimes overlooked, areas in diabetes care - how to support people with their emotional as well as physical health.  Diabetes can have a profound effect on emotions, both in the short and long term, and can lead to difficulties in self-care as well as interactions and engagements with health professionals and others providing care.

Conversely, experiencing difficult emotions and coinciding mental health challenges and diagnoses can make living with diabetes much more burdensome.  Health professionals often say they feel ill-equipped to deal with emotional issues in diabetes clinical situations, or to pro-actively assess these

The impacts of Covid-19 have recently had many effects on mental health and diabetes, for example health-related anxiety, isolation and bereavement as well as more limited contacts with health professionals

For all these reasons, our workshop is offered to help you refresh and expand your skills in emotional health support as well as the equally important physical and clinical care you provide

This workshop supports participants to gain more practical knowledge of diabetes and emotions, by describing and exploring the different aspects through presentations and practical and interactive activities. Uniquely, we also present and teach ways to assess and monitor emotional health, both of individual people in day to day clinical encounters, and also in your clinic population. We explore which tools to use and how they can enhance your clinical practice and evidence base

Participants will leave with new knowledge and confidence to manage emotional aspects of diabetes and an action plan to incorporate emotional care equally with physical care. As with all Successful Diabetes workshops, they will have participated in an enjoyable learning experience provided by experts in diabetes, education and facilitation

Encouraging Attendance at Type 2 Diabetes Education

Each participant will also automatically receive SD's certificate of attendance, either in hard copy or electronically - or both if you wish!

This unique workshop addresses one of the most pressing needs in diabetes care - how to encourage and support people who are referred to Type 2 diabetes education programmes, to attend them.  National figures suggest that currently only approximately 10% of those referred attend, and the literature concerning the reasons why is growing. This workshop will help you to close the referral-attendance gap!

The workshop is for any members of staff who are in contact with people at the time of their diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes and subsequent referral to their local education programme. This means most particularly GPs and Practice Nurses, but could also include clinical and administrative support staff and specialists, including Dietitians and Podiatrists.  There is important learning for everyone in this workshop!

The workshop is supported by materials, references and resources and is fully interactive and learner-centred. This means, for example, that participants are encouraged to explore their own styles of referrals and generate and practice personal ways of translating messages from the literature around barriers to attendance into their own consulting style and timings.

‘Encouraging Attendance’ has already been shown to improve attendance to over 50% in areas which have commissioned it as part of their efforts to focus on Type 2 diabetes education.  It was originally developed as a 3-hour session, but can be offered in timings to suit your needs from 2 hours upwards.  The workshop has also been translated in one area, into an interactive Webinar so that staff can access it at a convenient time and place.  Whatever the timings or the means of learning you choose to commission, it is enjoyable, engaging, and above all, effective in enabling more people to reap the benefits of local education programmes

Workshop Structure

In usual Successful Diabetes style, this is an interactive, learner-centred workshop which can incorporate locally-desired outcomes. We will work with you to create the design, timings and outcomes you wish for and deliver it promptly and effectively

Workshop Costs (for up to 30 Participants in the UK)

The workshop cost includes all facilitator costs and travel and excludes venue and equipment, refreshments and participant attendance and expenses

Workshop for up to 4 hours costs £1000

For 2 workshops per day (eg a morning and afternoon session, or  an afternoon and evening session) the cost is £1200

Workshops of longer duration, or incorporating other means of learning or outcomes, will be costed on request

The workshop is subject to our usual terms and conditions, which you can find here

This useful, practical workshop addresses one of the most unmet needs in diabetes care - how to provide excellent diabetes care in Care Home and Home Care settings. There are often multiple staff of all grades and backgrounds and residents and clients with more than one condition and/or experiencing multiple care needs.  Diabetes can impact on other conditions, as well as needing regular attention itself, so it is particularly important for staff to be aware and attentive to diabetes care needs, in order to keep residents and clients in optimum health and wellbeing

This workshop supports participants to gain more practical knowledge of diabetes itself, eating and drinking, medication, monitoring, foot checks and the need for care plans.  Most importantly, the workshop helps them learn from and with each other and to devise a workable action plan for future developments.

Participants will leave with new knowledge and confidence to manage diabetes and diabetes related situations with residents and clients, and resources to put in place systems and processes to support this in their place of work. They will have participated in an enjoyable learning experience provided by experts in diabetes, education and facilitation

Supporting Young Adults With Diabetes - A One-Day Workshop

Welcome to everything you need to know about this unique and exciting workshop!

Each participant will also automatically receive SD's fresh new certificate of attendance, either in hard copy or electronically - or both if you wish!.

Please find all the information about the workshop below,

or

Download as a PDF

This unique workshop, launched in 2013, addresses one of the most pressing needs in diabetes care - how to provide services that will engage and support young adults with diabetes in all ways, including medically, educationally and psychologically.

A gap that is especially of concern is that of transition between children’s and adult diabetes services. This is a time when many young people become 'lost' to the system and find it very difficult to re-access services when they need them. This too is addressed in the workshop.

The workshop is for diabetes teams involved in the provision of services and education for young adults. It supports the team/s participating to gain more understanding of what helps and hinders young adults in engaging and participating in their diabetes care, reflect on their current and desired provision, undertake problem-solving for the challenges they face and develop specific skills in communicating with young adults. Most importantly, the workshop helps them to devise a workable action plan for future developments.

The workshop is supported by a dedicated website, containing the pre-course preparation (see below), post workshop reflection, resources and comprehensive references, which can be accessed before, during and after the workshop.

Collaboration with Joe

The workshop features the contribution and insight of a young adult with diabetes. Joe Fraser has lived with diabetes as a child and young adult and gives a practical and sometimes challenging presentation to help the workshop discussions and focus on real-life experiences and needs.

You can find out more about Joe and his work via this link
