£40m Opportunity to Broaden Reach of Diabetes Education!

NHS England announced this week that £40 million is to be made available for CCGs to make improvements in diabetes care, with the bidding process opening soon. Pending this, Diabetes UK gave the information via their news section

The categories for bids include improving uptake of diabetes structured education, which is extremely welcome news!

This is the perfect opportunity for CCGs to gain funding to commission our ready-made 1-1 structured education programme for Type 2 diabetes, the Diabetes Manual Programme. The DMP can instantly provide cost-effective, evidence-based, self management education to the many, many people who are unable or unwilling to attend group based sessions and so are currently missing out on any opportunity to learn about their diabetes. What's more, the DMP can be introduced and supported by staff within existing diabetes clinical time, completely integrating diabetes care and education

The DMP is a 12-week, home based programme which people with Type 2 diabetes work through themselves. It is introduced by a trained facilitator, typically a practice nurse or educator.  The facilitator then provides 3 support contacts at intervals during the programme. It has been shown in randomised controlled trials to improve confidence and skills in self-management, and reduce both HbA1c and diabetes distress. It meets all the NICE criteria for structured education and, most importantly, is welcomed and enjoyed by people using it!

Successful Diabetes is the perfect partner for a CCG to introduce and support the Diabetes Manual Programme, with an easy and direct, personal 'single point of contact' for implementation, and a proven track record of efficiency in supporting successful diabetes developments

For all the details of the DMP and how to commission it or how to have an informal discussion to find out more, just take a look here and get in touch!
