We both have a background in diabetes nursing, and have many years experience in diabetes care across a broad range of services and approaches, including acute settings, outpatient clinics and primary care. We have been involved in many national and regional initiatives that have helped move diabetes care forward in both the UK and abroad. We have also invested time and energy in our own development to help us to provide high-quality learning opportunities for people, whether they live or work with diabetes. Our skills and qualifications include using an empowerment approach to diabetes care, effective education methods, counselling and psychology.

During our years in the NHS and subsequently as In Balance Healthcare UK, a company we developed in 2002 and rebranded in 2008 as Successful Diabetes, we have provided over a decade of skills training for health professionals, and have collaborated with international experts, particularly in the fields of empowerment and psychology, in developing effective approaches to education. We have worked for many years with Diabetes UK and are their preferred providers of skills training for their volunteers, who are people with diabetes and their carers.

One of our specialities is providing tailor-made solutions to people's training needs, so we can adapt any of our workshops to suit the needs of the group we are working with. We also develop new workshops in response to changing patterns of care in the NHS, so for example we have led the way in developing training in using a care planning approach.
